When attempting a DIY website design, it's best to make the website unique to stand out among the rest. An efficient way to build a website is by downloading a computer program online. A simple approach is to download various templates found online. Before choosing a DIY website design, it's important to select a domain name that suits the purpose of the website. Keeping animation and sounds to a minimum will limit distractions for visitors to the website.

For the novice who wishes to create a basic DIY website design, creating a free website online is easy to do. The main drawback to a free website is the addition of pop-up advertisements. If a budget allows, spending a little extra to eliminate pop-ups can be worthwhile. It should also be noted that free websites generally offer limited space for photos and files. Also, free templates offer little freedom for creativity.

While free DIY website design is a basic no-frills concept, free web editor programs can be found online. In addition, there are free tutorials that can be very helpful for beginners. Free software programs are generally adequate for personal use, although not recommended for business. For a DIY website design intended for business, it is best to use a professional website editor with many useful features.

It's important to create a DIY website design that will draw visitors to the site. Search engine optimization (SEO) is an essential aspect of successful web design. Learning the fundamentals of SEO is not as challenging as one may believe. It is important, however, to grasp the concepts of hyper text markup language (HTML) when designing a website. Good organization is a must, and it is essential to proofread the HTML code for errors.

Online site builders offer free trials for those interested in creating a DIY website design. Website builders generally charge a monthly fee after the trial period expires. Fees may vary according to specific web designs and features, so it is best to compare. When deciding on a website builder, it's best to choose a site that uses contrasting colors for easy readability.

It's also a good idea to choose a web builder that offers free stock photos and free domain names for a DIY website design. In addition, a website builder should be user-friendly. Those who use smartphones for the web may wish to use a website builder optimized for cell phone use.

@hamje32 - I’d just like to add that there are places online you can go if you want stock, royalty free images. You are not limited to your site builder or your hosting provider.

Just do a search for photos and “public domain” and you will find plenty of images that you can use. Be sure to read the fine print however. Some photos do require you to provide some citation for the photo, depending on whether or not there is some commercial product in the photograph.

@allenJo - Regardless of how you build your site, I think you’ve got to optimize it for the search engines. The main way to do this is by embedding keywords in different parts of the website. Use the most common search terms and embed them between the different tags in your website in addition to the content of course.

Don’t go overboard by stuffing keywords into your site; just use a small number here and there. The search engines will scan for keywords and if they see them on your site you stand a better chance of ranking high in the search engine results.

@David09 - That's great. Whatever service you use, however, I don’t recommend free hosting services. The article is correct. These sites are teeming with popup advertisements. It undermines the credibility of your site in my opinion.

I think the free websites are good only if you want to get your feet wet with some kind of programming language like PHP or something like that. You can use the free site to test out your scripts.

But if you are trying to build a real website meant to be seen by the public, then pay a web hosting service. Some of the really good services will offer you a website for a mere few dollars a month, which is a small price to pay for having a really good site up.

I used to have a website that served as an online writing portfolio. I didn’t have time to design the website myself, but the hosting service I used had a website builder which made the process quite easy.

I had hundreds of templates to choose from, using a wizard like interface. When I was done, I had a very professional looking website that took a minimum of effort to build.

I had a lot of compliments on the site. Many people looked at it and asked me who designed it. I told them that it was all template-driven. The only problem with template driven websites is that there is the remote possibility that someone else has built a site using the same template.

The way around that, however, is to choose enough unique options so that the site looks different enough from anyone else’s.
